Rijkswaterstaat: Walloon SPW tracks down suspect in Meuse River pollution case

The Service Public de Wallonie (SPW), the Walloon counterpart to Rijkswaterstaat, has filed a report against a company in the Liège region. The company is suspected of having been involved in the discharge of the pesticide propamocarb into the Meuse River.

Pollution of the Meuse River

In early August 2025, the intake of water from the Meuse River for drinking water production was temporarily suspended due to elevated concentrations of the chemical propamocarb. This suspension, with intermittent breaks, lasted until early November 2025. Propamocarb is a pesticide used to control fungi in horticulture.

The SPW reports that, following an extensive investigation, they were able to pinpoint the source of the contamination and filed a report against a company in the Liège region. This report was forwarded to the public prosecutor’s office (Walloon Public Prosecutor’s Office).

To date, no significant elevated concentrations of propamocarb have been detected in the Meuse River.

Monitoring Water Quality

Rijkswaterstaat monitors the quality of river water. This is important from a public health perspective. Furthermore, good water quality is one of the prerequisites for a healthy ecosystem. Want to know more about how we do this? Then take a look at the Aqualarm page.
